Shielding Shielding
This is an important issue today with the need to meet the regulatory rules that now exist within the EU. Shielded wIndows are used to reduce to a minimum Radio Frequency Emissions generated by electrical equipment and to protect sensitive electronics from external electromagnetic interference.
Methods and Typical Results
CR39 (Prism A) and Acrylic standard filters are manufactured here using micro fine mesh, in stainless steel or copper. This is cast into flat sheet totally encapsulated, ready to machine to drawing and the final window is then terminated with a silver busbar for contact. Our standard filters/windows are produced using mesh with wire diameters .025mm to .05mm and weave densities 50, 70, 100, 200. Most commonly used is the 100 Opi Stainless steel silvered and blackened or copper blackened. Both are highly conductive and non-reflective, which is particularly advantageous in clear filters. In addition, the mesh angle can be varied to suit different display requirements to counteract any moire fringing. As with all our windows, we have the option of providing two different types of anti glare (fine or medium) or the shielded window can be standard with no anti-glare.
Prism 'A' is almost completely solvent resistant and can operate within a wide temperature range, that out-performs other window constructions. After machining our cast mesh to a drawing, we are left with an exposed layer of the mesh in the centre of the edges. An application of silver membrane ink is bonded to these edges forming a circuit and is extended, if required, to the front or rear of the window. It is now ready to place within your component with either a conductive glue or one of the various shielded gaskets that are available on the market.
SHIELDED PRISM 'A' (CR39) is cast in house with thicknessess ranging from 1.8mm to 8mm thick and has a standard tolerance of +/- .1 (although we can offer +/- .05 if required). We offer a standard gloss finish on both sides or a medium/fine anti-glare on one or both faces. Coloured shielded CR39 is available, colour matched to your sample. UV stabilised shielded CR39 also available.
SHIELDED ACRYLIC is cast in house with thicknessess ranging from 1.8mm to 7mm thick and has a standard tolerance of +/- .1 (although we can offer +/- .05 if required). We offer a standard gloss finish on both sides or a medium/fine anti-glare on one or both faces. We offer many different colours as standard or we can colour match any colour to your sample. UV stabilised shielded Acrylic also available.
The shielded windows can be machined with either a step or butt-edged finish; which ever is best suited to your design.
Typical Results
Type (1) - 100 Opi stainless steel , silvered and blackened at 45 degrees. Type (2) - 50 Opi stainless steel , silvered and blackened at 90 degrees.
Material Properties
Most of our shielded windows are cast on site using Prism 'A' with a micro-fine stainless steel or copper mesh encapsulated within, forming a one-piece window. We also cast with acrylics where many colours are available. Prism 'A' is a highly scratch resistant material made from Allyl Diglycol Carbonate and offers a high impact strength, bright surface transmission with a refractive index only slightly lower than crown glass.
Prism 'A' (CR39)
- Half weight of glass
- Bright surface transmission
- Resistant to pitting from hot sparks
- High refractive index
- High impact strength
- Resistant to acid, alkaline and solvents
